Han foretog langvarige studier af nomadefolket tuaregerne i Sahara og af samlere og jægere i Afrika og SØ-Asien. Hans hovedværk er Ecology and Culture of the Pastoral Tuareg (1963, udvidet udgave The Pastoral Tuareg, 1997).
