Han var fagets første professor og oprettede i 1965 Institut for Antropologi ved Københavns Universitet, hvor han fornyede faget fra kulturhistorie i retning af socialantropologi. Han foretog langvarige studier af nomadefolket tuaregerne i Sahara og af samlere og jægere i Afrika og SØ-Asien. Hans hovedværk er Ecology and Culture of the Pastoral Tuareg (1963, udvidet udgave The Pastoral Tuareg, 1997).
