211 sider. Orig. paperback Abstract With considerable originality, The Desire to Desire undertook the detailed study of a particular genre of film at a particular historical moment as the occasion for a critical discussion of issues and concepts central to the semiotic—psychoanalytic film theory developed in the 1970s and early 1980s (the British journal Screen — to which Doane herself contributed — played the key role in this development). The book was concerned with possibilities and difficulties raised by the use of that film theory from a feminist perspective, as a means of posing feminist questions of cinema (the major initiating text for that use was Laura Mulvey’s ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’, first published in Screen in 1975 and reprinted in her LDS book Visual and Other Pleasures. Historical and theoretical, The Desire to Desire was also political, engaged in contemporary debates within feminism about women’s relations to the mass cultural productions of the given social order of male domination, the understanding of ‘female spectatorship’, and the problems involved in achieving alternative images and representations.
