The Typhoon was the RAF’s chosen heavyweight fighter-bomber to support the British and Canadian armies during the invasion of northwest Europe, and the 20 squadrons in the 2nd TAF that flew the aircraft should appear in any list of ‘war-winners’. They introduced the large-scale use of the rocket projectile to land battles, performed the main role in taking out the German radar defence systems prior to D-Day, made the key intervention in defeating the almost-successful German counter-attack at Mortain in August 1944 and undertook pinpoint attacks on enemy headquarters that crippled the Wehrmacht’s ability to respond at key periods in 1944-45. These battles were by no means one-sided, with the Typhoon’s nemesis - the highly effective German flak units - exacting a terrible toll on 2nd TAF units from June 1944 through to war’s end. Indeed, some 400 aircraft and 150 pilots were lost during the Normandy campaign alone. The tactics employed by theTyphoon squadrons during these epic events are revealed and supported by the words of the pilots themselves in this volume. 96 sider i formatet 18,5 x 25 cm.
