The book describes the operational history of the Luftwaffe’s infamous dive-bomber of World War II. It charts its fortunes in the hardest theatre of all; the war against the Sovjet Union. The fearsome reputation that the Stuka had enjoyed in the opening months of the war, but which was shattered over the English Channel in the summer of 1940, was restored the moment the invasion of the Sovjet Union was launched. Against a demoralised enemy, the Ju 87 scored a string of spectacular successes. Inevitably, however, as the Sovjet Union slowly gathered strength, the Stuka units would find themselves outnumbered, outfought, and - with but a few exceptions - relegated to operating under cover of darkness by the autumn of 1943.
