Originally published in 1943, the publisher tells us that ''in this present edition the articles have been thoroughly revised and rearranged. Some of these have been compressed to make them more proportionate while a few have been enlarged. Besides, eight more lives have been added.'' In the extracts from the preface to the first edition, the publisher explains that these various 'lives' are from the pen of different writers. And further explains that although no study of the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna can be complete without the life of Swami Vivekananda, this well known disciple has been omitted from this study just because so much other material is available on his life and influence.
