Af Rudolf Arnheim

1. udgave fra 1936 på forlaget Faber & Faber Ltd., London

pris: 4910 kr – stand: ★★★★★

A true pioneer work on the Radio media. 296 pp.+ 32 b/w photos. Original blue cloth, gold lettering on spine, 8vo. The cover has some wear but is overall very good. Inside is tight and clean. Rudolf Arnheim was born in 1904 in Berlin. From 1928 to 1933 he was cultural editor of the Berliner 'Weltbühne'. After the Nazis came to power in 1933 his newspaper was put out of publication and the sale of his innovative book about film, 'Film als Kunst', was no longer permitted. Because Arnheim's ancestry was Jewish he had little choice but to flee his homeland and in August 1933 he went to Rome. When Mussolini declared his support of the race laws, friends vouched for Arnheim so that he could go to England. There he worked as a translator at the BBC for two or three years waiting for an entry visa for America. In 1940 he arrived in New York. While still in Italy Arnheim wrote his work on Radio, titled in manuscript 'Rundfunk als Hörkunst' (Broadcast As Art). When it was finished in 1935, it was impossible to publish it in Germany. Instead, the manuscript was delivered to England and translated as RADIO (1936). In this book Arnheim contemplates the possibilities for what he perceives to be a new form of art, born from the invention of the wireless. He further discusses a range of ontological and conceptual considerations with topic headings such as A New Art of Sound; Voices Without Bodies; The Hermit At The Loudspeaker; and Armaments In The Ether. Arnheim discusses one of the major contributing factors that has stifled the development of radio art: a hierarchy of the senses which installs sight at the top of the perceptual ladder. The 1936 edition is generally considered unprocurable. This copy is signed on title page by Joergen Roos, a well-known Danish writer and director of documentary films (1922-1998). Rudolf Arnheim died at the age of 102 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on 9 June 2007. (hh 0849)
