Ulæst. Bob Foster is a well known figure at book and print signings in many parts of the UK. Although recognized as a Battle of Britain veteran, little is known of his life, or the details of his war service with the RAF. Often serving right up in the front lines, Bob saw the war at very close hand, and then quite by chance became one of the first, if not the first RAF officer to enter Paris with the liberating French army, and again, by chance, was in General de Gaulle’s triumphant procession down the Champs-Élysées. Persuaded to tell his story to air historian and well established aviation author Norman Franks, the result is a very readable account of his flying years. His memoir is an entertaining collection of stories and reminiscences of two distinct areas of WW2, which also shows how luck often shaped the lives of the fighter pilots involved.

Ulæst. The Last of the Combat B-17 Drivers is the compelling and detailed personal account of Col. Harold D. Weekley, USAF (Ret.), 398th Bomb Group pilot, and the last combat B-17 First Pilot of World War II to fly the Boeing B-17 as pilot-in-command into the new millennium. This comprehensive work combines Col. Weekley's keen recollections with documented historical facts to describe his experiences as highly-trained U.S. Army Air Forces pilot in World War II, notably his combat missions aboard the Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress as a First Pilot flying from wartime Nuthampstead, England; his shoot down and bailout over enemy-occupied France; his escape and evasion from enemy forces; and his eventual repatriation to friendly forces. This book concludes by describing Col. Weekley's close association with the legendary B-17 into the twenty-first century. Throughout this 352-page work, Col. Weekley shares unabashedly his lasting love of his wife, family, and country. This book is abundantly illustrated with over 200 rarely seen black and white photographs, eight appendices, a comprehensive index, and hard-to-find information

Ulæst. 'I went into the cloud and went flat out for a few minutes, turned, and as I dived out my luck was in and I got him head-on. He went straight into the sea and I am glad to say there were no survivors. A Dornier which had blown up came floating down in bits and another burnt up on land. It was a most spectacular show.' Known as Pedro to his comrades and Tiggy to his family, Osgood Villiers Hanbury was a charismatic Eton schoolboy who, before his untimely death aged 25, became acting squadron leader of 260 Squadron in the Middle East and was awarded the DFC and bar for his bravery. Here, using letters and first person testimony, is his life in the RAF from training school to the Battle of Britain and ultimately to the Middle East. Pedro, with his pipe, mustache, upper-class accent and slightly detached air was the archetypal public-school educated Englishman, but his leadership skills and care for his men commanded respect from all ranks and nationalities. An accomplished letter writer, his lust for life and thirst for action are evident in his missives to family and friends. His dramatic firsthand descriptions of air battles that cost the lives of his comrades are a thrilling testament to the bravery of 602 Squadron, but are counterbalanced by his frustrations of life in the Middle East, the long wait for action and the opportunities for leisure. With the help of Christopher Hanbury, the son he never saw, and Christopher Shores, the acclaimed author, Robin Rhoderick-Jones has written a fine tribute to a naturally gifted pilot whose fearlessness, efficiency and unswerving devotion to both his duty and his loving family were praised by colleagues and superiors alike. Sir Christopher Lee was Pedro's intelligence officer in the Middle East and had kindly agreed to pen a foreword.

Ulæst. Merriam Press Military Monograph MM69. Fourth Edition (2014). The Story of Sgt. William True, American Paratrooper in World War II. The true story of William True, a paratrooper who served with Co. F, 506th Parachute Inf. Regt., 101st Airborne Div., from training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, through Normandy, Holland, Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, to Alsace and Berchtesgaden. Now that Easy Company of the 506th PIR has been made famous by "Band of Brothers," it is Fox Company's turn, and this is the story of the men of that "band of brothers" in a moving, memorable account. The title derives from True's jump into Normandy at 1:20 a.m. on June 6, 1944. Bill landed in a pasture next to a very placid and unconcerned cow. Bill spoke a friendly greeting to her, but received no response. Why not? Because the cow spoke French. 59 photos, illus., maps.

Ulæst. “Slaughter vividly conveys the reality of combat during World War II in his book with sweeping passages that literally place his reader on the battlefield beside him.” Belvoir Eagle Before D-Day, regular army soldiers called the National Guardsmen of Virginias 116th Infantry Regiment "Home Nannies," "Weekend Warriors," and worse. On June 6, 1944, on Omaha Beach, however, these proud Virginians who carried the legacy of the famed Stonewall Brigade showed the regular army and the world what true valor really was. In this moving World War II memoir, the author captures the day-to-day comings and goings of GI Joe from pre--World War II National Guard days through induction, training, deployment overseas, and more training. All leads up to D-Day and Normandy on June 6, 1944, when Sergeant Bob Slaughter came across Omaha Beach with Company D of the 116th Infantry. This was the beginning of his long march to final victory in Europe, a march that would take him and his fellow soldiers of Company D, at least those who survived, to Holland, the Bulge, and on into Germany itself.

Ulæst. Touching, thoughtful, and dead honest, To Fly and Fight is the story of a boy who grew up living his dream. During World War II Anderson flew with Chuck Yeager in the famed 357th Squadron where he became a triple ace by shooting out of the sky fifteen enemy planes. Ulæst. This is the unique story of Red Campbell - the story of a man who would stop at nothing to live his dream. In the autumn of 1940 when he was eighteen, John A. Campbell III (Red) tried to enlist with the US Army Air Force. He was turned away. His high school education and youth were working against him. John was desperate to get into the fight. Even the Royal Air Force (RAF) turned him down, telling him to return when he was nineteen. Red's birthday was only one month away. He returned. He was accepted. He became an Eagle. In the words of John A. Campbell III (Red): "Over the years, friends and relatives have asked me why I have not written a book about my WWII experiences. My answer has been that there are several books already published in which the writer has said some very flattering things about me (not always accurate). So why should I ruin the image already established by telling the truth? Now, as I surrender to the evening of my life, I finally realize that I have much to tell. Where Eagles Fly is my story, as I remember it. The most important thing to me is to know that my kids and their kids and all of the generations to follow, know exactly who I am and from where I came . . . This is my story...Where Eagles Fly is my Legacy...Remember Me..."

Ulæst. Des Curtis was one of the founder members of 618 Squadron. Formed within days of the illustrious 617, 618's primary objective was to mount a daylight low-level attack by Mosquitos on the German battleship Tirpitz within hours of the attack on the Ruhr dams. The operation, codenamed Operation Servant, was given top security classification, to the point where the subject was excluded from the minutes of the meetings of the Chiefs of Staff of the air and naval forces. The author reveals the dilemmas and conflicting priorities existing to the highest levels, setting out in detail the technicalities of developing the 'bouncing bomb'. He also writes first hand about the tactical problems of getting to and from the target; and the tensions and strains endured by the Mosquito crews themselves, as they took the war to the German U-Boats within the sight and safety of their bases.

Ulæst Between April and July 1944, Truman Smith Flew thirty-five bombing missions over France and Germany. He was only twenty years old. Although barely adults, Smith and his peers worried about cramming a lifetime’s worth of experience into every free night, each knowing he probably would not survive the next bombing mission. Written with blunt honesty, wry humor, and insight, The Wrong Stuff is Smith’s gripping memoir of that time. In a new preface, the author comments with equal honesty and humor on the impact this book has had on his life.

Ulæst. Two soldiers manned each gun. As this action was taking place on the ground, we noticed that every guard tower was being reinforced with an additional occupant and the weather cover that normally protected their machine guns had been removed. Each guard in the tower had also been equipped with a rifle. All weapons were pointed in our direction. It was a chilling, sobering experience. We received word from Col. Goodrich that the "passive resistance" was over. The directive did not require repeating. The German commandant had clearly made his point. The prisoner count and subsequent prisoner counts were conducted in an orderly manner. It wasn't until the first week in April 1944, that we were informed that the majority of the escapees from the North Compound had been captured and that fifty men had been murdered on orders from the German High Command. Many of those shot had been prisoners for several years, having been captured early in the war. This unpredictable action by the Germans was devastating news. There was no easy way to overcome the profound effect the deaths of these men had on their close friends and the rest of the prison population. Realistic and gritty, Journey to Freedom and Beyond delivers a compelling true World War II story that showcases the triumph of the America soldier.

Ulæst. Soon after the United States entered World War II, American ground and air forces were on their way to the European theater of operations. Among that offensive buildup was the 15th Air Force, consisting of four-engine heavy bombers--the B-17 and B-24--as well as twin-engine medium bombers and several types of fighter aircraft. The 15th was first stationed in North Africa and then in southern Italy, where pilots could strike at any military target within a 700 mile radius. After ferrying a B-17 to England with the 8th Air Force, Lt. Edward Logan was transferred to the 15th Air Force, Fifth Wing, 483rd Bomb Group, 817th Bomb Squadron in Italy. Logan and members of his unit were assigned to use American air power to destroy the German military's manufacturing and petroleum complexes as well as its intricate transportation system. This gripping memoir gives a detailed account of Logan's experiences throughout his Army Air Corps career. It outlines the progression of a determined would-be pilot through two years of training, his 1944 journey to the war's theater and advent into actual combat. While other missions are summarized, the work's main focus is the author's thirty-fourth combat mission, which took place in March 1945. During this operation, his B-17 bomber sustained damage so severe that he and nine crewmen were forced to bail out over enemy territory. Aided by Slovenian partisans, Logan and his crew evaded the German troops who were searching for them and returned safely to their base. This firsthand account includes insider details, technical specifications of the B-17 bomber and previously classified information. An epilogue provides additional information on the partisans and the composition of the 15th Air Force.

Ulæst. On August 13, 1944, during his 44th combat mission, Joe Moser's P-38 Lightning was shot down. Captured by Nazi forces, he and his fellow group of Allied fliers were scheduled for execution as terrorfliegers and shipped in overcrowded cattle cars to Buchenwaldthe infamous work camp where tens of thousands died of cruelty, medical experiments, and starvation. Once a simple farm boy focused on sports and his dream to fly the fastest, meanest fighter plane, Moser now faced some of the worst of Hitler s ghastly system. From the harrowing and sometimes hilarious experiences of flight training to the dehumanization at the hands of Hitler s SS, this is a story of quiet, steady courage sustained by faith, family, and the commitment to freedom and liberty in even the most desperate of circumstances."

Ulæst. This is the wartime autobiography of one of South Africa's most famous pilots. Steve joined the SAAF at the outset of World War II with the desire to become a fighter pilot and to fly in Europe to destroy the Nazi's ambitions of power. However, he was too good a pilot and having gained his wings was posted to become a flying instructor in his native country. After two years he finally arrived in Europe and joined the RAF's Balkan Air Force flying rocket-firing Beaufighters in support of the partisans who were endeavouring to evict the Germans from their homelands. He joined No 19 Squadron under the command of the legendary Don Tilley and flew many missions against enemy shipping, gun emplacements and tactical targets in low-level, surprise rocket attacks. After the war he returned to Africa, flying light aircraft in a variety of roles, but when Berlin was blockaded by the USSR he returned to fly DC-3 Dakotas throughout the Berlin Airlift. This is a story told with a compassion that belies the author's bravery and piloting skills. Throughout the story, his strong Christian belief, as with Leonard Cheshire VC, occasionally surfaces from the heat of battle and narrow escapes from death.

Ulæst Rodney Scrase's life in the RAF began in an old airship shed where he took the King's shilling in May 1941. He went on the fly Spitfires as far afield as America and Malta with No. 72 and No. 1 Squadrons, finally being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. He was released from service with a record of four destroyed and three damaged, having taken part in the invasion of Italy, the attack on Tunis in 1943, and a stint as an instructor in the art of air to air gunnery. In Spitfire Saga, using Scrase's log books and interviews with the man himself, Angus Mansfield presents the unique story of one man's experience of flying the most iconic aircraft of World War II. Complete with thorough historical context and a true insider view of life as an RAF fighter pilot, this book is an excellent addition to any history enthusiast's library.

Antal sider: 332 - Indbinding: Illustreret hardback
