Duration: 300 mins. + extra approx. 1000 mins. w/ a large selection of Danish documentary films (e.g. The Harbour in Gdynia, Railways in Iran and The Copenhagen Opera House) and interviews with engineers and other key persons. EPISODE 1: harbour construction, coastal protection and road works and the new education in structural engineering at "Polyteknisk Laereanstalt" in Copenhagen, the first Danish engineering / contracting company of global importance: Christiani & Nielsen, who became known worldwide thanks to it's design of quays, arched bridges and immersed tunnels. EPISODE 2: The challenges of the period between World War I and World War II, construction of the harbour of Gdynia, the construction of caissons for The Little Belt Bridge, construction of 2,000 km railway in Turkey and Iran - works involving more than 55,000 men. EPISODE 3: The first Danish private plan for a motorway network with connections across The Great Belt and Oresund, how the Danish state implements the plan from the 1950's to the year 2000. And finally how initiatives by the public sector have boosted the profession of Danish consulting engineers. EPISODE 4: about the 5 years when Denmark was occupied by Germany during which time a number of Danish contractors chose not to work for the Germans - thus risking bankruptcy, whereas others chose to build for the Germans. EPISODE 5: shortage of housing after World War II and how the public sector chose to develop industrialised housing. Factories specialising in the production of modular housing in the 50's. Many people in the construction industry came to Denmark from abroad to learn about the Danish "adventure of modular construction". EPISODE 6: first signs of "old age" start to show in the major consulting engineering and contracting companies. Two companies succeed in keeping up with the development by ensuring organic growth and acquiring the new competences they find important, namely COWI, consulting engineers, and Pihl, contracting company. The programme deals with some of their international works. EPISODE 7 demonstrates how the Danish construction industrialisation can be continued through initiatives such as "trimbyg", partnering and construction management.
